How to Make Carved Pumpkins Last Longer This Halloween 🎃

If I’m going to spend all that time carving pumpkins, I would really like them to make it to Halloween!

We love carving pumpkins as a family, and there’s something magical about seeing those glowing jack-o’-lanterns on the porch every October. But here’s the problem: I love decorating early, and carved pumpkins don’t always cooperate. Between the weather, moisture, and mold, they can start looking pretty sad long before Halloween arrives.

This year, I learned a simple trick to help our carved pumpkins last longer, and I’m adding it to our annual pumpkin-carving tradition!

The secret is adding a few extra steps after carving to help slow down deterioration and keep those jack-o’-lanterns looking their best.

Step 1: Clean Your Pumpkins

After carving, remove as much of the pulp and seeds as possible. Make sure you’ve cleaned out all those stringy bits, especially around the cut edges.

Step 2: Treat With a Bleach Solution

Mix a 10% bleach solution (one part household bleach to nine parts water) and carefully spray the inside of your pumpkin and all the exposed cut edges.

This helps prevent mold growth, which is one of the biggest reasons carved pumpkins deteriorate so quickly.

Allow the solution to dry completely before moving to the next step. Always use bleach outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, and never mix it with other cleaning products.

Step 3: Apply Wilt-Pruf

Here’s the extra step I’m trying this year!

I take my pumpkins outside and lightly spray them with Wilt-Pruf Christmas Tree, Garland & Wreath Preserver.

Wilt-Pruf is a ready-to-use, pine-resin-based spray that creates a clear, flexible film to help preserve carved pumpkins longer.

There’s no mixing required! Just shake the bottle and lightly spray the pumpkins outdoors, preferably over grass or cardboard to protect surrounding surfaces.

For extra protection, you can apply a second coat after the first has dried.

Step 4: Let Your Pumpkins Dry

Leave your pumpkins outside with the tops off and allow approximately two hours for Wilt-Pruf to dry. Humidity can affect drying time, so make sure they’re completely dry before putting the tops back on.

Step 5: Decorate!

Now for my favorite part!

Arrange your carved pumpkins on the porch, add some flameless candles, and enjoy a little Halloween magic.

Of course, no carved pumpkin will last forever, and results depend on the weather and freshness of your pumpkins. But I’m all for trying a simple extra step that helps us enjoy our Halloween decorations a little longer.
